RE: 944 or 928?
I would save toyou hitfourty for a 911 (just kidding, kind of). Lots of parts available for the 944 so it makes it a good choice in my opinion. 928's are really inexpensive these days (probably due to parts and price) but not the best choice for your first Porsche (again, my opinion). Look for a later 944 (motronic) with the timing chain tensioner. I like the 944 for track, it is well balanced and is overall a fun car. A 928 is also a blast but if it has issues the love of a Porsche can soon turn into frustration. The cost is hard to predict, I purchased an 86 944 for my son and after doing the timing and water pump we probably put $200 into maintenance/yr (not including tires/oil/filters), so it can be economical (this car was in a garage and not used with 86,000 for almost 5 years). He was only 18 and used it for a few years then sold it for $2000. You should not have to pay a lot for a 944 there are plenty around if you are patient.
