Default Best car for under 40k

What is the best model for under 40k? I am mechanically inclined and have a good workshop. I want something that is fast or can be made/upgraded for speed, especially low end torque. Obviously not looking for a daily driver. I have owned many corvettes (older '60's and 70's), 348 Ferrari, '70 440 cuda.........I want a Porsche

Hmmm boy that is a tough one. There are a lot of good cars out there for the money right now. 996TT's are now available under 40k. They will have the cheapest and easiest way to upgrade to big hp later if you want (and the cars still maintain the easy drivability even at 700hp). 993's are well under 40 for a low mileage car and are pretty solid. Caymans as well.......

I guess it just depends on what you are looking for exactly.

Thanks for this info about the 996TT available under 40k. Many people are looking for a car in this price range which can be upgraded in the future.
