R&T 200 mph shootout
Interesting cover article in the September 2007 Road and Track: 0 - 200 mph shootout.
Two well known supercars (Lamborghini Murcielago, Mercedes SLR McClaren), couldn't make the cut, which was reaching 200 mph from standing within two miles. The Mercedes was close making it to 199.5 mph at the end of two miles, on two back to back runs, but as they say, no cigar.
Anyway, cars that did make it were the Porsche Ruf RT12 (650 HP, 35.5 seconds and a mile and a half to 200), the Lingenfelter twin turbo 427 C6 (800+ HP, 26.5 seconds, 4900 feet), Bugatti Verron (1000 HP, 24.2 seconds, 4800 feet), and the Hennessey Viper (1100 HP, 20.3 seconds, 3/4 mile).
It was a bit worrisome that the Lingenfelter had to drop out without doing a second run (its first was good enough, though to qualify it easily as 3rd place), with what turned out to be a small oil leak. That's two years in a row where Lings have had something break during these contests (last year it was the differential housing). The Hennessey is awesome, though, bullet proof and programmed to stage power (only 800 off the line to limit wheelspin, 900 from 60 on up, then 1000 at 100, and full power at 120): the Ruf is awesome, but the 8.2 liter Hennesseyjust proves there is no replacement for displacement
I'd like to take my 'vette to one of these contests someday and try to top 200. I think would have made the cut with times about like the Ruf's. It's down about 100 HP from the Lingenfelter that ran in this contest, but I know from experience that it does the standing mile (all we have in NC) at around 185-190 (details in the article say the Ruf did it at 187) so I expoect it would be about like that -- 35-37 seconds to 200 in 1.5 miles.
