I work in a publication where this photo ran, and the author has no idea what car it is. I'm not even sure if it is a Porsche and that is why I am here. If it is a Porsche, what year and model is it?

Sorry I missed this some time back. If you still care, it is a mid-50s Ferrari. I'm not sure which one actually you could look through a book on vintage Ferraris and find out not only the model but the serial #, as they made only two or three of most of these models, but it looks like a 1954 375 anyway, one the the big V12s of the period designed for the Mille Miglia or the Pan America races where sheer top speed mattered (a big Ferrari V12 in the Pan America was claimed to have hit 198 mph on one of the long straights, incredible for its time). They were ahead of their time but not by modern standards: 4.4 liter V12 with SOHC, carbs, four or five speed trans, often with no syncrhonizers, and a solid rear axle in many cases.
