Default 1999 996 engine failure/ Need Comments!

I would like to hear any and all comments about this unique issue, please read and give me your opinion... Timeline and storywill be abridged:

1. car goes to Porsche dealer for oil change
2. dealer harrasses and tries to buy car after holding me for a 3+ hr oil change, says they have a potential client that is interested
3. I finally agree for one client to look at the vehicle
4.after dealership gives me a boxster to drive home I leave and get 20 miles away and call back to sayI definitely dont want to sell my car
5. dealer returns car the following night @ 9:30
6. Car is driven oct. 31 and then again on Nov.3 (100 miles)
7.Valve sticks in Number 1 cylinder @ 20 mph (102,000) miles
8. dealer says 17500.00 repair
9. Car has never missed a service and never had a check engine light/ dealer said was bullet proof and one of the best examples of a well kept 99 911 they had ever seen.
10. found out that 2 people test drove vehicle unsupervised
11. dealership say engine failure coincidental not related to the unsupervised test drives.

What responsibility should the dealer shoulder? The service manager found a 2000 996 engine with <11,000 miles, but dealer will not warranty, should I install or not? What should the car be worth with the 2000 engine?

Please give me your thoughts on this matter, thanks

Jay

The whole story sounds fishy to me (in terms of the actings of the dealer....). You might want to seriously think about contacting an attorney and have them draft up a letter to the dealer. Dealers really don't like it when attorney's get involved, and they start to make deals pretty quickly. I get this odd feeling something happened with the oil change, and they needed to buy some time to fix it, so they had a "customer interested." I could be completely wrong, but it just sounds odd to me.

Thanks Doc... They did offer a settlement, it was for a used engine out of a 2000 911 with less than 11,000 miles; my monetary committment will be 4500.00... How am I supposed to know if the engine actually has <11000 miles and now I dont have the piece of mind that i had when i did the research to check out all of the history on the car prior to purchase. The car truly was a gem for its age!!! The dealer is not going to stand behind the motor either; is there anything I can do? I contacted Porsche North America in hopes to find someone that would help me given the strange story, but they wouldnt get involved. They did supposedly forward my emails to people that could help, but no response yet... Please let me know if you have heard of similiar cases and any info to present to the dealer would be helpfull. It also seems strange that an authorized Porsche dealer is able to install a used engine like a backyard shop would and not offer any piece of mind.

There is no real way to tell the number of miles on the motor. If it is going to include the ECU, then they could call up the miles and number of hours runs/over revs, etc on the engine, but again, you never know for sure. I would still contact an attorney and see if getting one involved will lower your financial commitment.

I dont know what the heck they could have screwed up on the oil change, short of not putting oil in the car and starting it, but I never cease to be amazed.

I imagine the dealer knows they probably contributed to overabusing a car that, through age and miles, was less than as robust as when new. The offer of an 11K mile engine sounds good, except for the cost they want to charge you, and the lack of a warranty to prove the 11K mile claim is legit. I would invest a bit in talking with an attorney. Probably with a call from her or him, they might warm up the offer: $3500 from you (you are getting an engine with many fewer miles) and a warranty (say 18 months parts and labor), seems fair. Maybe you won't get all of that, but I'd take that route.
