Default 2004 Anniversary Edition

I'm just starting what will undoubtedly be a long, careful quest to buy my first 911. I drove a 2004 Anniversary Edition last week, and was enormously impressed.

Can anyone give me information and opinion on this model? The dealer was offering it at a fair price, and it has very low mileage.

Thanks!

How many miles?

2004 was the final year for the 996. Like many mfrs, Porsche saw fit to produce a "special edition" in the final model year, although the 1,963 40th anniv. units produced might make it seem not so special. It is a C2 with some items that didn't appear on other C2s (or even 996s). Some of the main features are:
- X51 engine package (345 hp vs 320 stock).
- Turbo front fascia with side rocker skirts.
- GT silver metallic paint (only the Carrera GT had that paint color up to that point).
- 6-speed manual transmission.
- Locking differential.
- 18" polished "Carrera classic" wheels (8" front, 10" rear).
- M030 suspension.
- Power windows and sunroof.
- Luggage set and key case/wallet to match the interior.

Thecarmight befurther optioned as well. Typical might be PCM (nav), Bose, CD changer, comfort seats, and short shifter. Optioned out, the MSRP could exceed $95k.

I purchased one used (6,300 miles, 10 months old, pristine condition) 3 years ago from a dealer which certified it and gave me an extended warranty. It had the options I wanted, someone else had paid the first two years ofdepreciation (based on what I paid), and the fascia, rockers, and paintgive it a great look. I compared it to a 2004 996 C4S, a2005 997 C2, and a 2005 997 C2S. The 997 C2S was a great car and was probably a bit faster, but it had just come out, and Idon't buy expensive cars new and didn't want to wait a year until a few used copies became available. Plus, I never buy a car in the first model year (well, I did once, and that was a mistake I won't repeat).

My only complaint about the car is that the M030 suspension is firm on impact. I had Bilstein PSS9 coilovers installed this year, which provide better handling and a more benign ride. Other than that, no complaints.

Good luck. Let us know howyour searchgoes.

I'm interested in buying an '04 anniversary edition also. I had found one that the owner noted had a new/replacement engine - 30k miles on car, 10k miles on engine. I'm assuming this isn't normal.

Unfortunately, most of what I find is outside of VA. I've heard of asking for the PPI, but since I may not be able to see the car in person I have some concerns.

What things should I look out for?

If you find a car outside of your area, have the owner take it to a shop for a PPI, or a dealer. Look to pay about $125 to $200 for this service, but it will be well worth it!
