Default 911 GT3-Several Questions. Need answers pls..

Hi,

Relative newbie here.

I fell in love with the GT3.

I'm on the waiting list for the next GT3 at my dealer. I know it will be hard to get but am hopeful I will get lucky. Heardrumors it was a 2010 car with delivery spring or fall of 2009. Anyone hear more on this?

Couple of questions.

1. What do they meanwhen they say its a "high reving engine"?

2. I plan on using it very little. Weekends and such. I also travel for work a lot and it will often be in my garage for a month or 2 at a time without use. Is this a problem? Or in other words, is this not good for the car to sit for long periods of time, even in a climate controlled garage?

3. Any other owners out there that could add some color as to their ownership experince of thier 07 or 08 GT3's would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much,

1. What do they meanwhen they say its a "high reving engine"?
Generally, that term means that: a) the engine spins to a higher RPM than the standard model, and b) it produces its peak power at a higher RPM.
The Gt3 produces its peak power of 415 HP at 7600 RPM as opposed to thestandartd model S 6500 rpm - 16% higher RPMs. So, to get the additional power over the standard model you have to rev it higher.
A note: in general, assuming the stroke, bore, and heads are relatively unchanged, you can get roughly the same peak torque from an engine at any RPM you want by changing the cam. Since HP equals torque times RPM, a popular way to get more power from an engine is just to change the cam so it pushes the peak torque production band up to higher RPMs raise it from 6500 to 7600 and you get roughly 16% more HP.That, along with tougher innards so the engine can tolerate the revs, are basically what the GT3 engine is.
Problem is that in moving the toruq peak up in RPMs you reduce the amount produced atlow RPMS, which means the driver has to rev the engine more and keep it reving higher (and noisier) to drive it normally, etc. This is exhilerating when you are having fun but a pain in the butt in daily driving the reason GT3s really aren't used that much for daily drivers.
If you ant a daily driver, I'd look at the new direct injected S (385 HP) which doesn't give much away to the GT3 in power.

2. I plan on using it very little. Weekends and such. I also travel for work a lot and it will often be in my garage for a month or 2 at a time without use. Is this a problem? Or in other words, is this not good for the car to sit for long periods of time, even in a climate controlled garage?

Get the battery tender (the dealer will sell you one) you plug it into the cigarette lighter outlet. Otherwise leaving the car 20 weeks on more will run down the battery. Otherwise you are okay.

you wont harm the engine by not driving it for a month or two. Get a good battery charger to keep it in tip top shape and it will start first time every time.

I saw a video recently of a Porsche 917 being started for the first time in 30 years and started ith very little effort after a few mins.....

Battery is the only problem, but you must be attention to heat well the motor with few RPM, some minutes to work, after heat give gaz on it, its a fantastic car, one of the best Porsche, good luck to you .Best regards from Portugal...
