I'm considering purchasing a '00-'01 996, but need to be able to put a 1 year old in the BACK seat. Can a child's seat be installed in the back, or is the only option for putting one in the front seat and disabling the airbag?

Porsche can supply a child seat to fit the rear seats. I think it's called the prince? Some independents can supply & they can come up on e-bay occasionally.

I can confirm 2 children in the BACK of a 2003 C2 Cab. One is 23 lbs forward facing in a Britax Roundabout with the base removed, the other a 17lb infant REAR facing in a BabyTrend Latch-Loc. (NO room in the front seat for a passenger) Both of the Porsche seatbacks are removed, but the seat bottoms are not. I need to do some dremel work on the Britax to get it to fit below a slight overhang in the rear deck so I can remove the seat bottom for more driver room. (not relevant to non-cabs)

FYI: Britax is behind the driver seat and I am 5'6". For taller drivers you may have to squish a little. I expect after I remove the seat bottom I can get another 2-3 inches.

 

Did it work? I have a 99 carerra and am considering buying a child seat for it. I know that the Britax Roundabout is the one that people recommend. Didn't know that the seat needed to be removed.

 

 

It works great. I never did get the dremel out, I just got used to driving an inch closer than before (but I'm sure it would work).

You really do need to remove the seatbacks, it makes a substantial difference (and is easy to do with the right wrenches) in the end I just had my shop do it, took them 5 min, no charge (it's for the children after all

With any 996 I don't know that you really need the Britax, the seats are big enough for many brands. However, I do recommend them the extra $ really shows in the quality of the materials and the ease of use. The difference in adjusting seat belt tension between the Britax and Latch-loc is very substantial.

For REAR facing there are no seats that give you any reasonable front seat room. Any Infant (<12 mo, 20lbs) will have to be behind the passenger and the passenger seat will be useless until they can face forward.

The pic that PorscheDoc uploaded is for the booster type seat for children over 40lbs or so. There is MUCH less to the seat and therefore the Porsche seatbacks don't need to be removed. For any child under 40lbs your looking at a different seat with more structure such as the roundabout.
