Default K&N Cold Air Intake for a 2003 996?

Does anyone have any feedback positive or neagative on the K&N Cold Air intake kit for a 2003 996? I have a friend that really wants that 23.5hp K&N promises. I used the Fabspeed on my 997S and i am very happy with the sound and increase plus it was simple to install. Should my friend just play it safe and go with the Fabspeed kit or go for the full kit by K&N. Will the seat of the pants dyno test be able to tell the difference from one to the other? I am a little worried about the mass air sensor with the oiled filter. Is it hard to service the air filter on the K&N?

Thanks for your help!

Very negative, they cause persistent CEL lights from my experience. Also, it is not a peak 23.5hp, it is about an overall 3-5hp, the 23.5 is measured at a point in the rpm band, for instance, pre dyno shows 200hp at 4000rpms, with a final peak hp of 240, and with the K&N it shows 23.5hp at 4000rpms, and 243hp peak. I have tested it on my dyno, and I have also removed 4 systems because of persistent check engine lights.

Thanks Doc! What do you think the best C.A. intake is for the 996 and what is the best/cheapest way for him to gain hp? I love the sound/performance of my Fab Speed. I think i might recomend that one to him.

These will trip your check engine light. I had to replace my mass air flow sensor.

Fabspeed and DRY not oiled airfiters, if you do not want MAFS contamination and engine check light issues.
