Default Transmission/Engine Noise ???

Has anyone had this problem or can you suggest what to do? I have a 99' 911 (6 speed) and the engine has been getting louder over the past few months. It happens when I drive over 35 mph. A local shop heard it and he says it's the Main Bearing and I need a new transmission.

He estimated it will cost about $7,000. My car has about 80,000 miles on it and I can't afford to dump that much $$ into it.

... help !!!

Sounds like you need a new transmission.

The only other option it would be would be the release bearing, but you should feel a difference in the clutch pedal if that has gone.

I haven't really noticed a difference in the clutch or anything. I might just limit the use of that car until I can get the $$ to fix it. Any recommendations on thta. There's a Porsche dismantler in Los Angeles that sells rebuilt transmissions for about $3500 with core trade. Then there's the labor. ....

Is this a common thing on 911's, or what could have caused this?

Thanks for your replys
