Do the online research on Kenwood electronics and you'll see the countless problems. As a "consumer" and not an"installer" I'd NEVER own another Kenwood. There are also problems with Kenwood NAVs in very hot climates on screen malfunctions. Get a Kenwood and you'll regret it.
First let me say that you guys have an awesome website. I'm not here to argue over a product that you know a lot more about. As a consumer, I've had better luck with Pioneer vs Kenwood--that's a personal choice. It's just like owning a Porsche over BMW. A BMW owner can argue with me all day why a BMW is better than a Porsche. Like cmilam said the D3 is a lower cost, less optioned NAV system than the 8120. I knew that and that's why I didn't opt for the Pioneer Z3. Heck I really didn't even need a NAV system. I do a few rallys with my buds and run the race track on the weekends. My buddys already ridicule me when they see my fancy NAV system--probably just jeolousy
At any rate, I appreciate your candid advice, comparisons, etc. Have a good one!

you should compare the dnx5120 to the avicd3 and dnx8120 to the avicz2 , those are the comparable models
