Trash in fuel?

Trash in fuel?
Fuel gauge is not functioning. Previous owner warned car was low on fuel. Drove it down the road and it acted as if it ran out of fuel. It would start for a second and then shut off. Then it wouln't start. Pushed it off the road and returned and poured gas in and it fired right up. Drove it six problem free months keeping it full of fuel. Went on a long drive and forgot to fuel. When stopped at fuel station it took almost as many gallons as the owners manual states as the capacity but still ran fine all the way home. The next time I drove the car it went 2 miles and lost power then shut off. Attempted to start unsuccessfully several times before starting. Put in gear and it stalled. Pushed of the road. After several attempts it started and ran several days without a problem until I loaned it to a friend. The same thing happened to him. I can hear the fuel pump when it comes on. Do you think I'm picking up trash/water from the fuel tank when I run it so low on fuel?

I don't know if it's like the 944's but I would check to if there is a strainer at the fuel pickup fitting leading to the pump. It might be getting clogged. You didn't indicate whether the previous owner had it sitting for a long time. I have seen where that can lead to a lot of varnish buildup in the tank, causing an inoperative/erratic fuel gauge, clogging of the tank strainer or fuel filter, and other such fuel system issues as the varnish breaks up and circulates into the system. Good luck.
