Default 86 944-87 924s parts swap?

does anyone knowwhat if any drive train is interchangable between the 86 944 and 87 924s?

I had heard that they had the exact same engine. I am hoping to rebuild the 87 engine to put in my 86. any info would be appreciated cj44.

do you have both cars sitting in your driveway, becuase you can always look to see if they are the same , i have heard that the 924 is just a smaller body then the 944 so everything should be the same

Not really a smaller body, just different fenders. Everything should interchange without a problem. All 944's are basically the same, except for suspension, and some electrical- like the early 83-85 and 85.5 on AFM's are different for instance.

ya , I can compare obvious parts but I didn't want to start tearing my enginedown if I can't use the other head.

thank you both I appreciate your help. I've decided to just swap heads and do the timing belt and everything then. which brings me to another question.I know the '87 has an automatic belt tensioner and the '86 doesn't so if i use the '87 head on the '86 block which tensioner should i use? Thanks again , cj44

No problem on engine parts trans is interchangable only to 83-84 944

You really need to set belt tensions with a factory service tool.

Unlike many other engines which can successfully be set by feel, this one is particularly difficult. After you get it set approx. take it to a local euro garage. should not be too expensive.

I am assuming your cam jumped time.

Good luck and let us know

THANKS FOR THE INFO. .ACTUALLY I was just going to rebuild the 87 head so I wouldn't have as much down time. My 86 head is fine (for now ) but the timing belt looks worn out so I plan to do it soon.

Thanks again , cj44
