944 alternator
I'm new to this forum and just bought my first Porsche 1984 944, checked it out fluids and so forth then drove it home 130 miles. The radio was cutting out now and then but I would just turn it back on. I thought it might be a wiring issue. When checking out car at home found as we turned the volume up we got a voltage drop, checked out voltage at battery it was 12.50, chaecked at cables it was the same. Pulled neg. cable off and car stops. I didn't think you would be able to drive that kind of distance on just the battery? Do you think it's the alt. or the voltage reg. Thanks in advance.

RE: 944 alternator
If you have 12.5 the battery will charge some and on a long trip you would be ok, its when you start the car over and over on short trips that you will run into problems. Likely the alt is going bad since it wont run the car without the battery.

RE: 944 alternator
when you get it out check the brushes in the back where the voltage regulator is, it is white and held in by 2 small bolts. the alternator may just be really old and when i had this problem i just replaced the brush/voltage regulator for i think 50$ as opposed to something like 250 for a cheap-esq re-maned one. you used to be able to buy the regulator unit on pelicanparts but that was a long time ago.
