Default 944 running hot

my bro's got an '87 944 S that always runs hot. funny thing is, the expansion tank feels cold, even when temp guage is almost in red.

I'm thinking water pump, thermostat??? ... hope it's not water pump.

any suggestings on diagnosis/running cooler?

Thanks!

Are the fans coming on? Could be the thermostat, or auxillary fan switch (if the fans are not coming on). Does it use any coolant?

fans are coming on. I think it may be using some coolant. If there's a slow leak somewhere, could it be too much air in the system?

Have you done any work on the coolant system that would cause air in the system? If you are losing coolant, and there are no visible leaks, you may want to do a leakdown and compression test, as you might have a bad headgasket.

found a leak using a pressure pump that attaches to the expansion tank and putting the car up on the lift. how long does it take to change a radiator?

First timers, maybe 2 hours tops to replace it and bleed the system.
