Default A/C compressor - I think Clutch????

Hi All.... I just picked up an 88 944 that needs alot of work... I'm learning as I go, so having said that I have a newbie question...

Recently on my 944 I noticed that the piece (clutch????) on the front of my AC compressor Pulley is loose. It spins then stops, spins then stops like it is catching with the compressor pulley but then stops... It is loose to the touch and wiggles if you grab it. It makes some noise but sounds mostly like a rattle and it doesn't seem to be bothering the belt. Any ideas?

It's going for belts and water pump next week, but I am considering towing it b/c of this. I don't want anything to freeze up and pop the timing belt.... I already have enough work to do and money to spend...

thanks!

Whats the milage, wore out clutch on a compresor can be many reasons, mostly because it has been low on refrigerant and has been cyling on and off too much, secondly is voltage drop issues, and thirdly air gap specs could be out, have it checked out good before slapping a clutch on a used commpressor. You most likely will need a full service when you do that on the A/C.

Almost 119K. The guy that I bought it from never used the AC. He said he never filled it with Freon... So, a few years of cycling w/ no freon may be the issue... I'm am guessing that it will need a full service. I would be surprised if it didn't!
