Default Charging problem

So my 944 hasnt been running right for a long time and ive been trying to figure out whats going on. After i replace the timing and balance belt, i noticed that there was a bare wire running on the fire wall and going into the cabin. I found out that this wire is a terminal relay that goes from the back of the alternator ( a blue wire btw) to the back of the fuse board. so i replaced this wire with a new one. But her is the problem. as soon as i start the vehicle it runs for a few seconds and dies. Now when i disconnect the wire from the alternator the car will actually hold an idle, but a crapy one and the system doesnt charge of course. once i quickly connect the wire while its running and ohm the battery it finally charges at 14V but then quickly dies again. I understand that this wire leads to the tach and when the engine hits a certain rpm range, the alternator charges the system. but what the heck is going on? This problem has been driving me crazy for almost a year now. Any ideas??

Well, the blue wire off the alternator and the red wire off the starter should meet at the firewall and clip into the main harness. From there it should go towards the ignition switch. I would have to pull the wiring diagrams to figure out the exact termination.
