The only headlight mod I endorse is the H4 conversion.

Do you have a link to that conversion?

At the very bottom of the page is the "7" Round" kit. This site quotes them at $90 per pair, but a local shop can find them much cheaper. I got mine for $20 a piece (sold separately,) and found a set of 2 for the FC at around $45 with shipping. Then you need a set of good HID H4 headlights. This becomes not only leaps and bounds cheaper in the long-run, but also adapts to a MUCH brighter bulb.

The 924 GTS/GTR clear headlights do not give the best lighting, due to the fact that the lights are recessed back in the bucket (more than the pop-up lights would be) and lower. This means that it is difficult for the beam to be dispersed in the proper area in front of the car. Plus, to add to the issue, the glass covers tend to deflect the light somewhat.

That being said, the real reason that these lights were used was to reduce weight and to free up room in the engine bay (no motor and raising apparatus needed anymore). On a street-only car, they don't make a lot of sense to have. On a dedicated race car, or one that does dual-purpose but does not see much night-time action, they aren't a bad idea provided that class rules permit the change.

H-4 bulbs/lenses in the stock configuration are a good idea. However, the shortcoming of the 944 lighting system, even with this upgrade, is the wiring. It really was sub-par to begin with, add in the fact that most of the 944's on the road are 16-22 years old, and the wiring is getting old and brittle. Numerous cycles of the lights going up and down and flexing the wires has caused casings to crack usually. Rewiring the system when upgrading to the H4 set-up is a good way to go.

Hope that helps!

The bonus to the non-flip up lights is that there is a ton of room in the engine bay. For folks looking to do a lot of strange things (me) this room is needed.

As to the cheap 7" rounds they are garbage (why do you think they are 20 bucks each), spring for a much nicer set from Cibie if that is the way you want to go.
