Early 944s that are stalling or breaking down...
I thought I'dpost a newideafor some of the frustrated owners who can't seem to find the hidden glitch that could be causing their 944s to shut downunexpectedly. Aswith any car, it can sometimes be a difficult task tofind a failing part when the carhas the wonderful habit of running perfectly when the mechanicdoeshis diagnosis.Much like Steven King's"Christine", my 944 decided to shut off on me while stopped at a busy intersectionsmack-dab in the middle of rush hour traffic. After 30 or 40cars had honked, given me the finger and yelled every obsenity known to the new road-rage community, my little red rocket started up like I'd just given her a tune-up and we drove away in blissful relief. Six blocks down the road I cruised intomy mechanic's garage to explain my experience. Also known as "Doc" my mechanic was Crew Chief for an internationallyfamous race car driverand his 944 team so hehas torn down and rebuilt more 944s thanhe cares to remember. He sent medown the road with a new ECM/fuel pump relay and everything was wonderful again, my red rocket was once again atrustworthy and pristine looking classic 1984 Porsche 944. As I watched the sun rise over the traffic lights the next morning at the same intersection, I noticed that the same people who were honking at methe day before were nowsmiling at meas they manouvered their cars around me as I was frantically trying to start my red rocket in exactly the same position I was in theday before.Once again"Christine" started up like a champ and ran like a deer right to my mechanic. A few hours later I drove away sporting brand new ignition wires, Boschcap and rotor. She's ready for the highway! I boasted to my wife for hours that night, how the red rocket performed coming home that night, effortless Porsche ...handling the country roads, up, over, down and around the hills of that ashphalt ribbon...likeno other sports car I'd ever owned. Fortunately there was a tow truck driving down the same country road the next morning as I was sitting on the shoulder unable to restart Christine after she shut off again. This time"Doc"got the car while it was'not' running. With the very first attempt at an idea he grabbed a couple of wrenches, unbolted the fuel line and asked me totryto start the car. There wasn't a drop of fuel being pumped through. Brand spankin' new Bosch fuel pump ordered from Atlanta!! (There in three days flat!)I now have amint red rocket with unbeleivable throttle response, she barely flinches as I rise over the hills, the tach doesn't seem tomove below 2500rpms in 5th gear, I don't even have to downshift as I rise over these mountains with ease. The next morning while I was getting gas for Christine Iasked the gas station attendant if he knew a good towing company as I was unable to start my car. Within minuteshe pulled from the rear of the building in his tow truck, eventually hauling both me and Chris to the garage. Low and behold, just two days later his apprentice has found it! It's a little valve attached to the fuel pump called a "check-valve" that he couldn't blow air through, meaning it was clogged,(don't forget to mention itwhen you order the pump) if it is clogged, the fuel doesn't get through. If you have a fuel cut-off problem, make sure to order the "check-valve" withyour newfuel pump (which probablywas what killedChris's pump in the first place).
