i am new to this please forgive me question about 944 motorswap??
this might seem like a pretty stupid question but i am new to this whole thing especially a porsche
especially an old one that likes to eat money but oh well a porsche is a porsche is a porsche
(i apologie for lack of punctuation)
my question is
is it possible to swap a 1992 968 3.0 16 valve motor into an early model model 944 specifically a 1985 944 ??
only reason why is that i have happen to come across a very good condition motor from a 968 and i was wondering if by any chance it would work
now i know with money anything works but im curious as to what else in the car would have to be changed
i need to do alot of work to the car anyway such as new suspension brakes exhaust the usual for a car of this age
im wondering this because if i need to change everything once again to put the new motor in assuming it fits i might as well do it right the first time ???
if any one has any experience with this swap and or information leading me in the right direction i would greatly appreciate it
and one last quick question
where is the best place to look for a nice aftermarket exhaust and rims specifically wide rims ??
well thank you and i apologie for lack of punctuation and i apologie if this question is really a stupid one

Yea, you can drop it in as long as you get the DME and wiring harness from the 968 as well. Might need the 968 motor mounts, I am not sure, but I know it can be done fairly easily. Most everything should bolt right up.

You will need to get a custom exhaust and will have to deal with routing the DME harness in the passenger compartment, assuming you want to put it in the spot on teh pass floorboard as the factory did, since the DME on your '85 is located under the steering column. Motor mounts are the same as the 944's, so no problems there. Like Karl said, make sure you get the DME, wiring harness and MAF and it will fit in nicely. Its not the easiest job in the world, but certainly do-able. One big issue will be the instrument panel, as you have to wire the tach into the DME, and it won't fit directly into your existing dash panel. The speedo on your car runs off the front drivers hub, whereas a late model 944 runs off a sender on teh tranny. 968 speedos, on the other hand, run off the ABS sensor, which your car won't have, so it will take some head scratching to get your gauges to work properly.

I forget i am a little spoiled when i use the term "direct" there is always a little work involved to make it fit, but nothing major.
