There's a bunch of options, actually... All the info below is based on US market cars.
Series I cars, produced from '83 to '85 got the 2.5 ltr engine as previously described.
Series II cars, produced after '85.5 (they did a mid year change, hence the '85.5 designation, you can tell these cars by the updated "oval" dash boards) got a few different engines, depending on the car.
Series II Naturally Aspirated (known as "NA" cars) continued with the 2.5 ltr engine until '89, when it got bumped in displacement to 2.7 ltrs. In '88, the 2.5 ltr engine got a bump in compression which put it at 158hp, the 2.7 ltr bump raised the engine to 162hp.
Series II Turbo engines (aka "951") were a turbo charged/intercooled 2.5 ltr 8 valve engine, starting in '86 and produced through '89. The '86 through '88 cars produced 217 hp. In '88, Porsche produced a "limited" number of Turbo S cars (around 1500) that produced 247hp. In '89, all the 951's were produced to the "Turbo S" spec.
Series II 16 valve engines came in the 944S cars, starting in 1987 through '88 with a 2.5 ltr 16 valve engine that produced 188hp. This is a bit misleading tho, as you had to have the rpms cranked above 5k to get to the power, and most folks still consider the 944S the "dog" of the lineup.
In 1989, they upgraded the 16 valve to the "944S2", which weighed in at 3.0 ltrs and 208hp, and was a much heralded improvement over the 944S. They produced these through '91.
That should cover your questions pretty well. Feel free to ask if you have any more!
Regards,

Yes, yes you did. Photos would have been nice to illustrate the different looking engine configurations though......that would have made it perfect..
