I picked up an '88 944 at the PCA meet at Roebling Rd. today. Mechanically, it runs fantastically. I'm used to finnicky Euro engines from maintaining my Ducati so I'm not terribly worried about that. There's 0 rust, but it needs a good paint and one dent pulled. The big issue I have is the sunroof. I hear the motor running when I hit the switch, but nothing happens. First instinct told me the gears were stripped, but in the records there's a receipt from about a year ago when they were replaced. Do they really strip out that fast or did something jiggle loose. I'm just looking for common issues before I go tearing into crap.

Thanks a ton.

Sounds like the plastic gears to me. If they didn't reinstall the gears correctly, they would have just stripped again. I've seen that a time or two.

The gears are perfect, so I'm thinking that there's an issue at the point the cable connects to the motor.

Yeah, if the gears are fine then I would definitely check the cable and the motor, (which is located in the rear hatch area behind the vertical section of carpet on the driver's side of the car). If the switch is held too long the cable will continue to feed and eventually the cable feeds all the way through, which would explain why the motor works, yet nothing happens.
Good luck,
Landen
