Default What year(s) 944 are the ones to target

I am new to the Porsche forum and new to looking at finally owning no substitute.
What yr(s) 944 seem to be the one that is put together best, or has the best collectability? I need to do some homework, but as in any car, there are some yrs to stay away from and others to target. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

In my humble opinion the 1989-1990 944 S2 is the best variant of the breed. There is also a cabriolet (convertible) version of this car which is rare but nice. The S2has the sophisticated 944 multivalve engine that makes 210HP (only 10 less than the turbo), andthe serious gremlins are identified and sorted.

Thanks for the input. Little slow in this forum I guess. I see 16 peeks and only one reply. MaybeI shouldve added a little incentive for a response?
How about the early yrs? I am on somewhat of a budget because the car I am selling, wont bring anymore than 6-7K. Let me know if I can get a solid 44 for under that? I take it has to be a mid to late 80's to sniff that price range if that.

Thanks

Hi there, I would get an early model 83-85.It'll cost around 2500-4000 but you'll have some left over to modify or repair to your liking.

Thanks for that. What are some of the things to look out for when looking at a 944 to buy. Rust areas, mechanical problems known to 944's, etc.

Thank you

Hi Art,

New guy here too. I just bought a 1986 944 Turbo... I recommend the Turbo model! I'm not sure how many mechanical issues I will have over the next few years but the rush of the Turbo is going to be well worth it. (I'm used to maintenance costs... I'm a Land Rover fanatic.)

I have an '86. If you plan to drive it more than 3K miles a year better dust off your wrenches.

Are you referring to the Turbo model? I wasnt planning on buying a Turbo with that much age anyways. Turbos amongst any car out there with age to it, seem to need replacing. I see a 84 down the street for sale with 82,000 miles on it? They are asking $3900. Not crazy about the color (Brown) and I have to sell me MGB first. I am in the middle of a putting it back to together after a new paint job.
Thanks again for any info, and nice to be aboard...

Yes, I'm referring to the 1986 944 turbo (951 model) car. I treat it well but it always seems to have the hood up.

This is a bit of an old post, but I'm still gonna put my two cents in, ha. Anyway, I drive a '88 944 2.7, and its a great car except for its rust problem. I bought my 944 for $3900 with 105,000 miles on it, and other than the rust the engine is in great shape. When lookin for 944's make sure you search the car for rust, it is a very prevalent problem, also check when the last time the timing belt and water pump was replaced. I searched for a long time till I found the right car, so unless you really need a car asap try not to get impatient. Also with 6-7k you should be able to buy a lot more car for your money than I was able to. Good luck,
Landen
