Default Car Radio Lock?

I just replaced my battery and went to pains to make sure the electrical supply to the car was not interrupted because I could NOT find my Radio Code. I went to the dealer where they informed me that starting with some 2003 models, the cars did not have radio codes. The cars are "electronically mated" to the radio so removing all electrical would not matter so long as the radio remained in the car. I asked "what if the radio is stolen?" , and they suggested that the radio simply would not work in another vehicle.

Can anyone corroborate this? I have a 2003 Boxster S with the standard radio (no GPS) radio setup. It is a Becker Radio.

I'm curious because there are loads and loads of sites that sell or give away decoding instructions to get your code, IF YOU PULL THE RADIO AND OBTAIN THE ACTUAL RADIO SERIAL NUMBER. Apparently with the 2003 and later this isn't necessary.

I'd appreciate "non-anecdotal" responses. Does anyone with a 2003 or later car (preferraby Boxster) actually have a piece of paper with a Radio Code written on it that came with the car? The Owners Manual, in explaining how to change the battery says, as a final step..."Enter the Radio Code". Perhaps they didn't edit the OM after the 2003 models came out?
