PORSCHE BOXSTER VS. HONDA S2000

RE: PORSCHE BOXSTER VS. HONDA S2000
I think he meant s2000, not a year 2000. A year 2000 of any of these cars is almost impossible to purchase. And the tires for an s2000 stock are bridgestone s02's, which are rated for 15k as well. Based on the fact that cash for maintenance is an issue, the porsche is out for this guy, unless he can find a perfect garage queen of a boxster. That being said, an s2000 used can be an expense as well. A bad driver in an s2000 can cause lots of expensive damage - clutch damage, bent valves from mis-shifting. Bottom line, test drive both cars used, and take them to a good mechanic for an inspection before purchasing. Both will give you driving pleasure for years if cared for.
Here's another couple of important questions, is this car going to be your only car or a second car for fun? Also check your auto insurance for quotes on both...For me, the S2000 was actually more expensive to insure than my 911 turbo...go figure on that...

You are 18.....don't buy a Porsche. Period. You have been things to spend your money on than fixing your car at that age. Get something reliable like a honda. I am not saying the porsche isn't reliable (the boxster is very reliable), but if you have a convertible top failure, rear main seal leak, or intermediate shaft problem, there is going to be no way you can afford to fix it (cheapest one is about $2500 to fix). This does not happen very often, but it does happen on occasion and those issues are very expensive. Keep in mind brakes, and general maintenance parts, are all going to be more expensive on the Porsche. It depends on what your level of risk taking is. Typically I tell people if you can't afford to replace a tranmission or engine (worse case scenerios that do happen on occasion) in a particular brand of car, then you can't afford that car.

Exellent feedback on this question, with very sage advice. I agree that unless he's independently wealthy, a young guy shouldn't buy a Porsche until he can afford to maintain it properly.
That said, before I bought my Boxster (my first Porsche), I looked at BMW Z4 and Honda 2000. In my opinion there was no comparison between the handling and performance of the Boxsterto the Z4, and while the Honda 2000 had a great deal to recommend it, the Boxster is distinctively beautiful while the Honda is -- sorry to say -- pretty ordinary looking. That may not matter to everyone, but I want to LOVE looking at my car.... and I do.

18 Year olds should not be allowed to drive Porsches. They need to drive other cars for at least 10 years so they can appreciate how beautiful a Porsche is the first time they step into one. Get yourself a 2 year old Ford Mustang Convertable with a big fat V-8. That is a cool 18 year olds car.

I totally disagree!
Sorry but there is NOcomparasin!
I have both an 2001 S2000 and 987s. And there is no comparasin! The S2000 is now dated and expired!
I hate its tendecy to bite you backeven in a straight line, and totally useless even its smells a wet road! You have to rev over 6.300 rpm to get it going!
I had the S2000 for 4 years now and it never gained my confidence even after I updated the wheels to 2005s!
Regards theBoxster is a poor's man Porscheis another stupidremark which saw its birth in the 924 era, which in that case it was justified. I believe that the 924 helpedsaving Porsche in early eighties.
I prefer the Boxster S as its mid not rear, also note the I would bought a 911 with lower spec with approx the same money or even less.

RE: PORSCHE BOXSTER VS. HONDA S2000
Until my ignition switch went belly-up, my 2000 Boxster had zero problems in 87,000 miles. The car is and has been a ball to drive, catches eyes like no S2000 ever will.
But, I agree, the Boxster is no first car for anyone 18 years old. Pay your dues first, then search out a nice used one, or save up and buy a new one.

RE: PORSCHE BOXSTER VS. HONDA S20000
I have had both a 2002 Honda S2000 and I currently own a 2006 Boxter S. The Honda was a great car with zero problems.
Pro: Handling, reliability, gas mileage, large dealer network. Fast if you drive it like you hate it. Keep the revs above 6k and the power is there.
Cons: Cramped cockpit, low torque, pretty loud if you keep the revs in the powerband. Lots of "kids" have them now and have added the usual creepy mods like the giant mufflers, etc...
The reason I chose the Boxster is the improved torque, looks of the new body style, better creature comforts, and the two trunks really are practical for an impractical car.
Cons: The dealership is terrible. Horrible 1960's building and technology. I have had a couple of small problems with trim pieces that have been taken care of under warranty. Expensive service: $600.00 for the 20k "service" which is just a glorified oil change.
It just depends what is important to you. Good luck.
