Default Tapping noise

Hi to all members,
I have just purchased an 02 boxster 3.2 and am absolutley delighted with it except for one or two concerns. As i have very, very basic knowledge on mechanics,i would be very gratefull for any advice given. My first worry is that when engine is started and left to idle there appears to be a slight tapping/ticking noise from engine, and more noticeable the closer you stand to the side vents.Secondly after initial puff of smoke on start up,would you expect to see light coloured smoke(a small amount) while idling!!as when car is in motion this disapears.I know these questions may be stupid as my friends say im suffering new car syndrome.I must add that other than this the car runs excellent-oil level, coolant level etc ok.Thanks in advance for any replies.

The ticking or tapping may just be valve train noise, or a possible exhaust leak. If you are really concerned about it, then you may want to have a shop give it a quick look.

There will be a puff of smoke at idle, and the exhaust can smoke very lightly while it burns off condensation in the exhaust, especially if the climate is cooler. If it is smoking significantly, then you possibly have a bad Oil Air Seperator.

Hi,porsche doc.
Thank you for your quick response, its very refreshing that someone with your mechanical knowledge would take the time to advise owners of possible faults. The exhaust smoke issue makes sense now as the outside temp is about 8/10 degrees,as for the tapping noise i think i will do what you advise, and take it to a shop just for piece of mind!.If it is valve train noise or exhaust leak could you please tell me if these are big jobs as i dont want to appear totally green when they give there opinion, again many thanks for your advise.
